A L'Ombra del Tomir

Galería Pelaires

For this exhibition at Galería Pelaires, A l’ombra d’en Tomir, Woods has employed previously worked canvasses —remnants recycled from his studio— as the foundation for a series of luminous, larger than life images in oil, oil stick, dry pastel and urethane. The accumulation of multiple layers creates areas of intersecting, turbulent surface textures that partially reveal the processes involved in each painting; the traces of previous states become a formal documentation of their manufacture. Dense, deeply textured oil colour impastos contrast with thin translucent areas of dry pastel on specially treated raw canvas, giving the pictures a deeply layered perspective. Pictures of mostly female figures alternate with close-ups of poppy flowers and pods. The installation is punctuated with smaller framed works in watercolour on paper which are often sketches or source material for the larger paintings. Woods works and reworks multiple versions of similar images, working through ideas and drawing out different interpretations with each new iteration.

I usually use watercolor to work through ideas and in the development of larger paintings in other media. This selection of small to medium format watercolors on paper is my first exhibition dedicated entirely to these works.

Black Moon

Tim Sheward Projects - London UK
6th June – 29th June 2013
Curated by Julien Dobbs-Higginson

The Black Moon series of drawings were created for Woods' first solo exhibition in the UK at Tim Sheward Projects, London.
These works on paper reflect upon and contextualise, from a contemporary perspective, the nocturne - a subject that preoccupied some of the most important Northern European painters during the first half of the nineteenth century. The images in these drawings reflect the Romantic tradition, but they move beyond classical references. Woodsʼ work invokes recent mass media images and the work of contemporary filmmakers such as David Lynch and Nicholas Winding Refn -- particularly as they explore the dynamics of visual perspective. As a result his drawings possess a strong filmic presence and exude a sense of quiet solitude similar to the imagery of film noir.

Náufragos

A site-specific mural on glass covering the five storey facade of the Ibiza Gran Hotel. The work was painted by hand on large acrylic glass panels.

Subtle historical references serve as metaphors for the decadence and Dionysian nature of the island’s renowned club culture. Noting the island’s importance in bird migration routes, Woods draws a corollary between its chimerical human nocturnal activity and the fowl that emerge from within the foliage of the painted landscape. The work was painted on large acrylic glass panels that were subsequently installed on the interior of the existing glass façade.

Taking as a point of departure the idea of a cloister screen as a filter and modulator of light, Woods intersects it with an intensely personal, informed view of the Balearic landscape. Subtle historical references serve as metaphors for the decadence and Dionysian nature of the island’s renowned club culture. Noting the island’s importance in bird migration routes, the artist draws a corollary between its chimerical human nocturnal activity and the fowl that emerge from within the foliage of the painted landscape.

The mural adds an iconographic identity to the hotel entrance, visible from both the outside and inside of the building. Due to the sillhouetted, interior-exterior duality of the work it changes dramatically in differing light conditions: from day to night; from inside to out.

Sun / Moon

an investigation of color field perception and optical phenomena

This exhibition, at _2B - an extension of the architecture studio Moneo Brock, consists of a site-specific installation comprised of a series of studies using pure pigment powders on paper as well as a large scale wall drawing in pure pigment powder. The installation explores optical phenomena related to color fields and their relationships with the perception of our celestial - solar surroundings.

The Wrong Side of Town

"A show of paintings by the artist Nicholas Woods that explore new ways of looking at landscape, portraiture and still-life. Taking a highly subjective, personal approach to these classical genres, Woods creates mysterious images of a parallel world.

These latest paintings depict landscapes populated by a series of anthropomorphic characters who dwell on tree branches or in other similarly bucolic places. The characters interact on a within a humorous structure of personal relationships and social hierarchy." - Galería Maior, Palma de Mallorca, 2004

Room 603

Made in 2000, jointly with Monica Fuster, for the first edition of Nit Niu, an annual outdoor art event in Cala San Vicente, Mallorca, Spain.
A single rickety wooden chair sits in a floating plastic house which is basically a piece of overblown homemade pool furniture rocking on the surface of the sea; from the ceiling of the inflated structure dangles a bare light bulb. The whole thing symbolizes and at the same time humors the notion of the temple, solitary meditation retreat, even possibly a torture scenario in a way that to me seems beautiful in its fragility and ephemeral nature. - N.W.

gota a gota

"gota a gota, which means drop by drop, is a sort of kitchen daydream which floats between a hygienic fantasy and Chinese water torture. It represents a fictional story or environment that nevertheless is linked to material reality by its own artificially accelerated destruction caused by water dripping from a faucet." - N.W.   In collaboration with Mònica Fuster.
